The glare effect, also referred to as glare or glare, is a phenomenon involving over-sensitivity to light and the perception of diffuse light reflections that reduce visual contrast and cause visual discomfort or a temporary deterioration of visual acuity in the presence of bright light sources. There are two basic types of glare: disadaptive glare (disability glare), which physically impairs visual function by scattering light across the optical media of the eye reducing retinal image contrast, and discomfort glare (discomfort glare), which causes a subjective feeling of discomfort without objective impairment of visual acuity. This phenomenon is particularly exacerbated under conditions of low ambient light with simultaneous exposure to bright point light sources, such as headlights of oncoming vehicles during night driving.
