An EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) lens is an advanced type of intraocular lens characterised by an extended range of visual acuity, designed to provide continuous, functional vision from distance through intermediate distance to nearer intermediate distance, while minimising the photic phenomena typical of multifocal lenses. Unlike traditional multifocal lenses, which create discrete, separate optical foci by dividing light, EDOF lenses use various optical technologies - such as spherical aberrations, low-aperture pinhole effects, achromatic designs that correct chromatic aberration, or special diffraction profiles - to extend a single focus along the optical axis, creating an extended zone of acceptable image sharpness. This mechanism allows smooth transitions between distances without creating multiple competing images on the retina.
