Nystagmus is an involuntary, rhythmic movement of the eyeballs that can occur in different directions (horizontally, vertically or rotationally). It can be congenital or acquired, and causes include neurological disorders, inner ear balance problems, trauma, eye disease, and the effects of certain medications. People with nystagmus may experience blurred vision, difficulty maintaining visual fixation on an object and problems with eye-hand coordination. Treatment depends on the cause and may include drug therapy, surgery, use of prism glasses or vision therapy to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
