What is the Amsler test? The macular test

What do you need to know?

    • Test Amslera to proste badanie służące do oceny funkcji plamki żółtej i wykrywania jej zwyrodnień.
    • It involves observing the Amsler grid and checking that the lines are straight and uniform.
    • Helps detect early signs of macular degeneration (AMD) and other central retinal conditions.
    • The Amsler test can be performed by yourself at home, but an abnormal result requires an urgent visit to an ophthalmologist.

The Amsler test is one of the primary screening tests to assess the function of the macula - the central part of the retina responsible for visual acuity. It is quick and easy to perform eye test, which can detect early signs of macular degeneration and other conditions leading to deterioration of vision in the centre of the visual field. It can detect visual impairment at a stage when treatment can be most effective.

    What is the Amsler test?

The Amsler test is one of the basic diagnostic tools used in ophthalmology to assess the macula, which is responsible for visual acuity. It is particularly important in detecting macular degeneration, one of the most common causes of vision loss in older people. The examination is carried out using a special Amsler grid, consisting of evenly spaced lines and a focal point.1

During the test, the patient focuses his or her gaze on the centre of the grid, covering first one eye and then the other, so that even subtle changes in the visual field can be detected. What is the Amsler test? Its main purpose is to quickly detect line distortions, dark spots or missing images that may indicate damage to the central part of the retina or other visual disturbances. Detection of abnormalities requires further diagnosis by a specialist.

How to perform the Amsler test?

The test is carried out in a well-lit room, preferably in the presence of an ophthalmologist. You can also perform the test yourself at home by following a few key rules. Individuals at risk, such as patients with diabetes, high blood pressure or genetic loads associated with macular disease, should especially take the Amsler test.

    • Wear glasses or contact lenses, if they are used on a daily basis for reading.
    • Sit at a distance of about 30 cm from your eyes in relation to the Amsler grid, paying attention to the image dimension itself.
    • Cover one eye and focus your gaze on the point in the centre of the grid.
    • Evaluate whether all grid lines are even and whether there are any dark spots, breaks or ripples. Pay particular attention to some of the lines that may appear distorted.
    • Repeat the test for the other eye.

What does the Amsler test detect?

The Amsler test is used to assess changes in the macula and retina, allowing rapid detection of visual impairment. It is particularly helpful in diagnosing and monitoring the progression of conditions that can lead to sight loss. This screening test is simple to perform and its regular use increases the chance of early detection of ophthalmic problems.2

    The Amsler test enables diagnosis:

    • age-related macular degeneration,
    • damage to the central part of the retina,
    • visual disturbances due to diabetes or hypertension,
    • degenerative changes to the optic nerve,
    • other conditions leading to visual field loss.

By performing the Amsler test regularly, the first signs of retinal diseases can be detected before irreversible vision loss occurs. This allows people at risk, such as the elderly or patients with metabolic diseases, to implement appropriate treatment more quickly and slow down the progression of the disease. This examination is an extremely important tool in the prevention and early diagnosis of eye diseases.

What does a negative Amsler test result mean?

The Amsler test is a diagnostic tool for assessing macular function and early detection of central vision abnormalities. A negative Amsler test result means that the patient has not noticed any abnormalities in the Amsler grid - lines are straight, there are no dark spots, image deformations or line waviness. In this case, it can be assumed that the macula and the central part of the retina do not show significant pathological changes.

However, a negative test result does not provide a full guarantee of retinal health. Some diseases may develop gradually and may not initially give clear symptoms. Therefore, this examination should be performed regularly, especially by people over 50 and patients at risk, such as those with diabetes, hypertension or genetic burdens. Regular tests and eye consultations increase the chances of early detection of macular degenerative changes and enable appropriate treatment to be undertaken before the disease significantly affects the quality of vision.

    Ważne pytania i odpowiedzi

    • No, the Amsler test is only a screening tool to help detect early signs of macular and retinal disease. Eye examinations carried out by an ophthalmologist, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) or indocyanine angiography, provide a more accurate assessment of the condition of the retina and macula.

    • Healthy people can perform the Amsler test every few months as part of self-monitoring. Patients at risk, such as the elderly, those with diabetes or hypertension, should perform this test regularly, e.g. once a month, and consult an ophthalmologist about any changes.

    • Not always. Image distortions or other abnormalities noted during the test may be a sign of early macular changes, but do not immediately mean irreversible vision loss. Early diagnosis and implementation of appropriate treatment can slow or even stop the progression of the disease. In the event of any worrying results, it is worth consulting an ophthalmologist as soon as possible and performing additional eye tests.
