    What is snow blindness?

    Snow blindness is a burn of the corneal epithelium caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its symptoms include inter alia. watery eyes, a feeling of sand under the eyelids, eye pain and photophobia. Snow blindness exacerbates these symptoms especially in situations where sun exposure is intense and eye protection is inadequate.

    The causes of snow blindness are related to the reflection of UV rays from surfaces such as snow, ice or sand. In the mountains, at high altitudes, UV radiation becomes more intense, which further increases the risk of eye damage. In such situations, adequate eye protection, such as wearing sunglasses with UV filters, is crucial.

    If symptoms of snow blindness occur, apply cold compresses, avoid bright light (e.g. stay in a dark room) and possibly reach for painkillers. Symptoms usually pass after 24-48 hours if the eyes are properly protected.1

    How does snow blindness develop in humans?

    Snow blindness is caused by exposure to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which damages the epithelium of the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye.     Is snow blindness passing?

    Yes, snow blindness usually passes spontaneously within 24-48 hours if the eyes are given adequate rest and protection from further exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is a temporary damage to the cornea and conjunctiva which, although painful, does not usually lead to permanent damage.

    During regeneration, there may be discomfort when moving the eyes, tearing and photophobia. In some cases there are swollen eyelids and symptoms of conjunctival burning. The key is to stay in a dark room and avoid bright light to minimise symptoms.
