I’ve been wearing glasses for as long as I can remember, basically since I was seven years old. They were the first thing I reached for upon waking up and the last thing I put on the nightstand before going to sleep. I couldn’t exist without them due to my severe myopia – minus six diopters.

Although I got used to the fact that I would have to wear glasses for the rest of my life, and my face didn’t look bad in them, I always looked for alternatives.

I started using contact lenses at the age of sixteen. Then came college and lots of studying. Reading through the nights and the often unhygienic student lifestyle caused my vision to deteriorate. Additionally, I developed corneal erosion and was forced to give up contact lenses in favor of glasses.

The idea of undergoing laser vision correction arose while I was still in college. Back then, in 2005, it was a fairly new method of treating vision problems in Poland. During ophthalmology classes, when I asked one of the lecturers about this method of treatment, he spoke about it with considerable reserve.

Moreover, the price of the procedure was not very affordable for a student’s budget. All of this led me to postpone the thought of laser vision correction to an unspecified “later.”

When I started working, situations where glasses were a hindrance made me reconsider the idea of the procedure. I was fed up with constantly fogged lenses when wearing a surgical mask in the operating room.

Glasses also proved to be a problem during resuscitation – they constantly slipped down my nose during chest compressions. I just had enough of them!

And since I started earning decently, the thought of correction became realistic.

I sought the opinion of a specialist – an ophthalmologist with many years of experience, with whom I had the opportunity to work in the operating room. He told me that there had been significant progress in refractive surgery – femtosecond laser had been introduced, which significantly improved the safety of the procedure.

He also recommended the Blikpol Clinic in Sopot to me, as the only place equipped with this type of laser. Without hesitation, I called and made an appointment.

On November 23, 2015, the day of the procedure, I felt immense excitement. The thought that I would no longer need glasses for life made me dizzy. It was my dream, and yet imagining my life without glasses was so abstract that it seemed almost unreal.

I wasn’t afraid of the procedure itself at all. I read on the Clinic’s website that it was performed under local anesthesia and was almost painless. Once I crossed the threshold of the Clinic, I was enveloped in tender and professional care by the staff. On the day of the procedure, I also met Dr. Czuszyński, who, after examining me, explained to me, as a doctor to a doctor, what the procedure would entail.

Finally, the moment of the surgery arrived. During the procedure itself, I was quite calm, although I intentionally refused to take hydroxyzine in premedication. The operating room staff explained every stage of the procedure.

The slight discomfort accompanying the procedure, associated with the pressure on the eyeball or a tingling sensation, seemed like a small price to pay for a life without glasses. The procedure itself lasted maybe ten minutes. Although I’m not sure about that due to the excitement, which could have distorted my sense of time…

I returned home and went to sleep. I couldn’t wait for the morning when I wouldn’t have to reach for glasses anymore. When I woke up, my vision wasn’t perfectly sharp, I felt a burning sensation in my eyes, but with almost every hour, I noticed an improvement in visual acuity and the discomfort became less intense.
If I had to undergo the procedure again, I would take 2-3 days off work after the procedure. During this period, vision is not ideal, bright light is quite uncomfortable for the eyes. Moreover, the cornea needs a few days to “recover.”

The first week after the procedure, I learned to live without glasses. I sometimes still reached for them on the nightstand right after waking up. There were also moments when I wanted to adjust them on my nose. Several times, I caught myself forgetting that I no longer needed them. My life changed dramatically after the procedure.

I can work comfortably in the operating room wearing a surgical mask. Everyday situations, such as taking off a shirt over my head, have ceased to be a problem.

Going on vacation to warm countries, I no longer have to stock up on contact lenses to be able to wear sunglasses. And besides, everyone tells me that without glasses, my eyes look so beautiful :)

I would recommend both laser vision correction and the Blikpol Clinic, and laser vision correction at the Blikpol Clinic is even better :)
