Very often patients ask us about physical activity after undergoing laser vision correction surgery. They are full of fear and conflicting information that they will not be able to undertake any activity for at least 2 months.
Exactly yesterday another concerned patient asked: „I heard that after the procedure I won't be able to run or cycle at all for a few months, it's a huge inconvenience for me. Do I really have to give up sport for so long?” We emphatically answer NO and denounce false information.
Physical effort after laser vision correction
The refractive surgery procedure carried out on the cornea of the eye, which is laser vision correction, is one of the cosmetic procedures. The cornea is the top layer at the front of the eyeball, which has incredible regenerative properties.
For example, when we scratch our eye, a section of the cornea is usually damaged. The eye starts to pinch and tear a lot, and this is due to the high innervation of the cornea. However, after just a few hours, when the epithelium is renewed, our eyes „feel” much better and the discomfort stops. After a few days, if the damage was only superficial, there is no trace of a scratch. Of course, it is worth mentioning here that any injury to the eye should be consulted with an ophthalmologist, as topical anti-inflammatory drugs may need to be administered to prevent infection.
Corneal cone and physical work - laser vision correction recovery
Similar to corneal trauma, the case is similar for corneal correction by laser. However, there is one fundamental difference. The procedure is carried out with a laser, which makes the whole procedure safe and controlled. A scratch with, for example, a branch or a fingernail carries a much higher risk of infection than interfering with the cornea with a laser. It is thanks to such efficient regeneration of the cornea and the latest methods using only lasers to carry out the procedure that we can return to all daily activities very quickly.
Corneal healing after laser vision correction
Usually vision is already adequate for normal functioning the day after correction. For safety reasons, it is advisable not to undertake any physical activity for a week after the procedure and it is more a question of controlling the condition of the eyes, so that nothing falls into our eye or that, when we want to wipe the sweat off our face, we do not accidentally rub our eye.
Sam effort does not pose a major risk to the eyes. Non-strenuous sports, e.g. running at a pace of approx. 5-6 min/km at a pulse rate of up to 70-75% maximum heart rate, recreational cycling, or gym exercises at medium weights suitable for 12-14 repetitions in a series can be started as early as one week after the treatment. In the following weeks, the intensity can be gradually increased and after three weeks normal training can be resumed.1
Sport after laser vision correction
For the longest time, refrain from contact sports for known reasons - so that the eye is not traumatised, which would jeopardise proper healing of the cornea. Here, it is usually recommended to go about 1-2 months without practising, for example, boxing or team games. To avoid infection after surgery, you should also not swim with your head submerged or dive for about one to two months.
In addition to general guidelines, it is important to remember that healing is an individual matter and everyone has different predispositions. If the regeneration processes in your body are fast, it is highly likely that your eyes will heal in a short period of time after the procedure and you will be able to enjoy good vision and sports without corrective glasses very quickly.
When can I start exercising after laser vision correction?
Gym after laser vision correction - can you exercise after vision correction surgery?
The 3-month recovery period is no accident. It is during this time that your eyes need to return to full function. Also, your body will be weakened for a few days after the procedure, but this will pass. As for the physical exercises themselves - you will certainly be able to return to them after a few days, but provided you keep an eye on keeping sweat out of your eyes. On top of this, you should limit heavy lifting and physical exercises that you do with your head down. Of course, contact sports should definitely be abandoned for a while. All for your own good and with a view to a speedy recovery.
Capsulotomy and exercise - what is not allowed after cataract surgery?
Following cataract surgery, many patients are able to return to physical activity, but there are certain restrictions and recommendations that must be followed to ensure safe healing of the eye.
1. Kapsulotomia - convalescence: Immediately after surgery, it is recommended to limit physical activity. In the first few days after surgery, it is important to avoid intense physical exertion that could affect the intraocular pressure or cause damage to the eye, which is still sensitive after surgery.
2. light exercise: After the first few days, if healing is going well and as advised by your doctor, you can gradually return to lighter activities such as walking or gentle gymnastics. It is important to avoid sudden movements of the head, bending or lifting weights.
3. moderate sports: Usually, after about 2-3 weeks after surgery, if there are no complications, patients can start doing moderate physical activity, including brisk walking, cycling on flat terrain and even mild gym exercises. However, sports with a high risk of impact or concussion to the eyes should be avoided.
4. contact and water sports: Contact sports such as football, basketball or boxing should be avoided for at least a month, and even longer depending on the instructions of the attending physician. The same applies to swimming, diving and other water activities, which can increase the risk of infection. Consult your doctor before resuming these activities.
5 Individual recommendations: All of the above recommendations may vary depending on the individual patient's case, surgical methods and possible complications. It is always best to consult the ophthalmologist who performed the surgery for specific guidelines on returning to physical activity after cataract surgery.

After cataract surgery, it is advisable not to lift heavy objects for about 4-6 weeks to avoid an increase in intraocular pressure that could interfere with the healing process. In the first few days after surgery, it is advisable to limit lifting objects weighing more than 2-3 kg. Specific recommendations depend on the pace of recovery and the doctor's assessment during follow-up visits, so it is important to strictly follow individual post-operative instructions.

It is important that the doctor confirms that your visual acuity meets the requirements for drivers during follow-up visits. In the first few days after surgery, there may be photophobia or blurred vision, making safe driving impossible. It is crucial to follow instructions and protect your eyes from excessive light, such as with sunglasses.
