There is no doubt about this, otherwise we would not benefit from a visit to an ophthalmology practice. Although we go to the practice with confidence in the doctor and trust that he or she will help us, it is also up to us to make sure that the visit goes smoothly and what kind of result we get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have prepared a few rules for you to follow so that you can feel satisfied at the end of your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting an ophthalmologist - how to prepare?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When registering for an appointment, choose a date with the registrar so that you have some time to spare. Not every eye examination at the practice takes the same amount of time. Patients may require different appointment lengths, which is not always predictable at registration. Usually appointments are made every 20 minutes and qualifying treatments every 30-40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean that every patient will spend exactly this amount of time in the surgery. Some may require an extended diagnosis or a longer medical history, others will have more questions than the average patient, and still others will need to be given pupil-dilating drops, after which they will have to return to the surgery again in a few tens of minutes, which may delay the visits of subsequent patients. However, if only a visual acuity test is performed, the use of drops may become unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to take to the ophthalmologist?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are going for an eye examination for the first time, remember to bring a document with your photograph. You will need it to be admitted to the doctor's surgery so that the specialist can issue you with a prescription, medical certificate or sick leave. Without proof of your identity, it will not be possible to obtain any of the above documents. If you are a regular patient of a particular doctor or facility, an identity document will not be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bring previous test results with you<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are undergoing treatment, it is essential that you take your medical history from previous surgeries with you to your eye examination. Also take a list of the medications (including drops) you are taking along with the dosage. If the ophthalmic examination is for a visual defect, it is welcome to have previous examinations that will be useful in determining the progression of the defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much do eye drops work with an ophthalmologist?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we mentioned earlier, an eye examination may involve the use of pupil-dilating and accommodative-paralysing drops. After such drops, your vision will be impaired. Usually for about four hours you will have worse vision, especially nearsightedness, and you will be struck by light. Pupil-dilating drops (usually Tropicamide) are given so that the doctor can see the fundus of the eye and its deeper structures, such as the lens, which are difficult to diagnose through a narrow pupil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long after a fundus examination can you not drive?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the deterioration of your vision, you should not drive a car or operate any machinery until your vision has returned to normal. This is why we recommend that you arrange for a companion to drive you home or decide to return by taxi or public transport. It is a good idea to bring sunglasses with you to wear when you leave the surgery so that you are not dazzled by the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is it like at the ophthalmologist? What does the visit look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor's waiting room is a place where the golden rule \u201edo not do unto others as you would have them do unto you\u201d should be taken deeply to heart by every patient and accompanying persons. Above all, people in pain who find loud telephone calls or shouting children particularly irritating may be waiting with you. If you have to make a phone call, you can leave the waiting room for a while and go outside, and if you absolutely have to take your children with you or they are patients, organise an activity for them so that they do not get bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you need to say at the ophthalmologist? How do you prepare for an eye test?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honesty is essential in your medical history. This is very important for your safety and the good outcome of your treatment. During the medical interview, do not conceal any facts about your past illnesses, treatments or medication you are taking. Already before the appointment, remember the important points about your health condition and ask your close relatives (parents, siblings and grandparents) about their eye diseases and other more serious conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medical history prior to the ophthalmological examination is extremely important, due to the fact that an initial correct diagnosis can be made even in 70% patients after listening to them, i.e. after a properly collected history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Write down the questions you would like to ask the doctor<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory can be fallible, so a few days before your appointment, start preparing a list of questions that bother you and that you would like to know the answers to. The doctor, despite his or her sincere desire to impart as much knowledge as possible to you, will certainly focus on the essentials, i.e. the health recommendations you are to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He or she will not necessarily be able to predict the state of your knowledge and what is of particular interest and importance to you. Remember also that if you do not understand or hear what the doctor has said, ask him or her to repeat or write down the name that is difficult for you to understand. It is better to ask the doctor to the best of your ability than to then treat yourself on your own or look for a solution to the problem on the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A visit to the ophthalmologist - what does it look like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical ophthalmic examination should look as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Medical history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual acuity test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking the field of vision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measurement of intraocular pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examination of the anterior segment of the eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ocular fundus examination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possible fitting of glasses or lenses if required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does a visit to an ophthalmologist involve?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, the ophthalmologist will carry out a health history and a series of basic examinations to assess the condition of the patient's eyes, as well as the visual defect, visual acuity and note any symptoms of concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, basic examinations are carried out in the ophthalmologist's office, leading to a preliminary diagnosis. One of these consists of an assessment of the condition of the eyelids, the orbits and the mobility of the eyeballs.
